RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Partner with peers for the implementation, and management of operational aspects of the annual budget.
  • Establishes profit, growth and operating objectives as part company’s overall business plans.
  • Responsible for company’s financial performance including but not limited to loss ratio, premium plans and commission targets.
  • Achieves profitability and growth goals through the development and execution of an annual strategic plan including specific underwriting, pricing, retention, customer service and expense control.
  • Participate as required in rating boards to keep abreast of industry, rating and coverage issues.
  • Fosters positive relationships with commissioners and regulatory boards.
  • Provides overall direction for underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management of product lines.
  • Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis: including rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the senior management team and develops plans to resolve issues.
  • Conducts research, analysis and development of insurance products. Assimilates trends in the industry, determines underwriting best practices and contributes to training/development curriculum for product lines.
  • Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and best practices, in accordance with legislative guidelines, to ensure compliance and the integrity of the product lines.
  • Identify new opportunities by utilizing competitive market and pricing research, coverage analysis and a hands-on approach to providing direction and guidance on attainment of growth and profitability targets.
  • Analyze data on competitors’ products, programs, and pricing levels and collaborate with the actuarial division to make recommendations for new pricing levels and product modifications.
  • Enhances existing products and programs through collaboration with staff and appropriate actuarial and compliance staff.
  • Monitors corporate results, develops and implements actions as needed.
  • Effectively communicates the organization’s strategic direction, goals and priorities to staff, including direct and indirect reports.
  • Direct, manage and develop various levels of staff, including but not limited to goal setting, assessment, staff selection, role alignment and completion of performance appraisals.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of performance management metrics.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or similar graduate level degree preferred.
  • CIP, FCIP, CRM required
  • A minimum of 15 years insurance experience in underwriting and marketing of property and casualty lines of business, specialty lines experience is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of senior management experience is required.
  • Possess the expertise in underwriting discipline and knowledge in the P&C insurance field.
  • Strong product development and product strategy. Including development of new lines of business
  • Must have proven strategic planning, analytical, decision making, problem solving, planning, communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and successfully implement, and manage major projects
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of the regulatory and legislative framework for the P&C industry in Canada.
