RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Underwriting functions including direct as well as inward-facultative underwriting submission review, pricing analysis, setting of terms and conditions, and quote/binder/invoice authorizations.
  • Execute approved General Casualty business plan to establish and develop balanced and diverse book of business in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
  • Set appropriate terms and conditions following the Company’s business strategy to quote selected risks.
  • Exercise proper underwriting pricing and discipline to meet profitability goals, comply with underwriting guidelines, systems, and procedures.
  • Mentor junior underwriting staff which includes, but is not limited to, training and development.
  • Maintain underwriting files in an orderly manner and in accordance with underwriting guidelines, including maintenance of all reporting systems for submissions and bound accounts, rate change modelling, bound account listing, submission log and reports as may be developed.
  • Conduct pre-quote and mid-term underwriting audits as needed.
  • Expand existing portfolio of business by strengthening existing relationships and developing new prospective clients across Asia, focusing on the key market of Japan.
  • Interact with existing and prospective clients, brokers, re-insurers, and other business partners in support of the business across Asia, focusing on the key market of Japan.
  • Liaise with distribution, internal auditors, Claims, Actuarial, Accounting, IT and Legal departments as appropriate.
  • Assists Department head to prepare the strategic planning and budgeting.
  • Monitor the Japan facultative reinsurance book throughout all Line of Business and report to Asia Pacific management team on a quarterly basis.
  • Takes on additional responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • College degree required.
  • 10+ years of underwriting experience in the General Casualty sector in areas including but not limited to public and products liability, product recall, environmental liability, employees’ compensation, umbrella liability and other relevant liability lines of insurance in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proven track record in underwriting complex General Casualty risks in the Asia region, including Japan.
  • Strong fundamentals in underwriting principles, pricing, and knowledge of policy wordings.
  • Strong market knowledge, and established relationships with brokers and other intermediaries in both direct and reinsurance space across Asia, including Japan.
  • Ability to develop ideas, methods, procedures, products, determine causes and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work; effectively resolve conflict among priorities.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity and trust.
  • Ability to interface with employees and management at various levels.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and training to lower level associates.
  • Strong marketing, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Japanese.
