  • Performs reserve valuations on a semi-annual basis and making recommendations to the Appointed Actuary with respect to changes.
  • Coordinates year end valuation process with accounting and external auditors including preparation of the Appointed Actuary Report.
  • Regularly monitors the level of actuarial reserves required by line of business and recommend changes where appropriate.
  • Monitors claim reserve activity at the branch level and work with Corporate Claims to address any reserving issues that arise.
  • Calculates the discount rate to be used for monthly/annual valuation purposes.
  • Regularly updates and monitors Long Term Disability claims.
  • Maintains the valuation database necessary for all policy valuation.
  • Ensures required regulatory reporting for financial reporting is carried out.
  • Manages performance of direct reports inclusive of providing professional and technical guidance, and provide regular performance reviews.
  • Identifies and recommends refined approaches to current reserving methodologies.
  • Remains up to date on all regulatory and legal actions/decisions affecting insurance company operations in general and the corporate actuarial group specifically.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an actuarial role Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society required.
  • Extensive knowledge of current insurance reserving techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Property Casualty insurance industry and insurance operations in general.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to understand context and its impact on all issues.
  • Identifies when something needs to be done and initiates action as required.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive plans that bridge complex issues and span across time.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate a vision.
