RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish KPIs and ensure data is available to manage measure & achieve department goals, building a roadmap to enable P&L responsibility within the team.
  • Build a team and structure to align with our strategic direction that is effective and efficient in serving our customers and appropriately designed to support key initiatives including operational transformation.
  • Supervise, coach and develop staff to ensure efficiency of the department, satisfaction of customers and clients, and to maximize associate performance. Ensure personnel risk is managed appropriately.
  • Articulate & drive understanding across the organization of the roles, responsibilities and value of product, underwriting & pricing. Build collaborative interaction models across the organization to ensure that the team is appropriately engaged as subject matter experts, adding value to solving business solutions.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement based on quantitative and qualitative insights.
  • Support simplification of existing product suite with an eye on longer term strategic solutions.
  • Support ongoing benchmarking activities of current products and pricing.
  • Deliver appropriate enhancements to products, ratings and underwriting practices in line with mid- term and long term strategic ambitions.
  • Manage client level pricing activities including sign off on proposed pricing and all business quotations.
  • Provide guidance on policy interpretations and administration and ensure proper communication with external and internal customers. Leverage this insight to fix systemic challenges in products or policy language.
  • Ensure products & policies are compliant to changing regulations.
  • Ensure pricing and underwriting risks and controls are managed appropriately, and the integrity of the activities and processes are maintained.
  • Ensure underwriting approach aligns with Regional and Global requirements.
  • Provide guidance to the most complex underwriting situations, ensuring the risk accepted is appropriate and in line with the org goals and strategy.
  • On the most complex of cases, make a decision on the portfolio risk based on risk profile of the prospective client, plan design requested and the previous experience of existing program. Includes assessing new or renewing portfolios.
  • Collect and analyze data to provide recommendations on the acceptability of the risk, providing reasons if declined and supporting with analysis showing the claims, expenses and profit expectations for the program.
  • Develop and implement solutions that drive efficiency into key team processes.
  • Achieve operational targets, generate results and improve the organization’s operational effectiveness.
  • Support acquisition of new business including implementations and policy creation as well as retention of current business, potentially participating in RFPs, client meetings, presentations.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of industry developments and competitive intelligence.
  • Respond to and collaborate on issues and requests from other internal and external departments.
  • Liaise with senior executive team on operational decisions relating to Product.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • University Degree in a related discipline coupled with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a Product, Pricing or Underwriting field with a minimum of 5 years’ experience at a senior level.
  • Experience within Insurance business is an asset.
  • Completion of any SOA or CAS exams is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years’ direct leadership experience. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead people, get results through others, provide coaching/constructive feedback, and drive engagement.
  • Strong change management experience or certification, and demonstrated ability to drive cultural change into an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to build sustainable relationships across all levels of the organization and across business unit operations.
  • Strong ability to dissect and improve inefficient processes.
  • Demonstrated success with creative problem solving, consensus building and managing diverse interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to think strategically and balance priorities to meet goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to present information to a variety of individuals in a clear and concise manner, at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven analytical skills and strong comfort leveraging numbers to drive business decisions.
