RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides overall direction and guidance to the Underwriting Team and is responsible for:
  • Meeting budgeted underwriting margins by: ensuring new quote and renewal policies and practices support appropriate risk selection and pricing for clients. Monitors results by line of business, block of business and/or clients to identify emerging experience trends and directs appropriate actions for resolution of unsatisfactory results.
  • Supporting new sales and revenue growth targets by: participating in strategic planning process at the Senior Leadership level and with the Sales Management Team to determine actions necessary to attain goals and targets. Provides direction to Underwriting Team regarding risk selection and underwriting policy. Works with sales to identify target clients/industries/types of business and proactively manage communications between Underwriting and sales teams to ensure timely and comprehensive responses to client requests.
  • Defining corporate group underwriting policies and practices by: Working with the Actuarial Team to categorize and select group risks appropriately. Ensures pricing supports profitability objectives. Defines corporate underwriting policies to support company's short and long term strategic goals.
  • Supporting cross functional projects, initiatives and Committees by: Working with other departments to implement best practices to handle tasks efficiently and effectively. Directs department resources for cross functional projects. Maintains communications with other members of leadership group to develop an understanding and awareness of interdependencies and issues.
  • Provides leadership to employees to promote motivation and teamwork and to ensure the provision of a skilled workforce by: Setting clear performance objectives for each team member, monitoring skills and abilities of the team members, providing informal coaching and mentoring support for the assigned employees; Conducting regular formal coaching sessions to review individual performance, conducting formal performance reviews to identify strengths and challenges; Overseeing training and career development activities for the team; Conducting regular team meetings to facilitate open communication.
  • Mentors team members, creating an environment where the team can develop their skills.
  • Maintains appropriate and effective staffing levels of the team through effective workforce planning, reporting, interviewing and selecting employees as required.
  • Monitors attendance and performance of employees, and addresses concerns through effective administration of the Attendance Management Program as required.
  • Participates in the progressive discipline process as required. Follows up and follows through with team members on plans that are set-up.
  • Develops coaching and action plans with Team Leader’s to assist staff that aren’t meeting expectations.
  • Consults with the CFO, Underwriting and Sales Leadership Teams to develop and implements strategic and tactical plans in alignment with corporate and divisional goals. Develops and executes annual business plans, project initiatives, department budgets and key performance indicators. Monitors progress of project milestones and key performance indicators and undertakes actions to ensure the achievement of company, department goals and service level objectives.
  • Develops annual department budgets and monitors financial results. Continuously looks for opportunities to maximize cost effectiveness through innovation, negotiation and business process improvements.
  • Ensures that the Team delivers projects that comply with industry standards and procedures.
  • Provides guidance to the leadership team to ensure effective communications change management practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of seven years’ related experience in group benefits underwriting experience including a at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Math, Economics or Actuarial Sciences.
  • FLMI or CEBS an asset.
  • Successful track record in developing and executing marketing strategies and tactics to meet business objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
