RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensures the org structure is adequate to serve the team’s various objectives.
  • Monitor work-related production and performance for all underwriter levels to ensure the Facultative Underwriting team maintains corporate goals and client expectations.
  • Serve as a mentor to all Facultative staff members during their interactions/negotiations with client companies.
  • Formulate performance plans, complete reviews, and initiate salary actions for underwriting staff. Provide guidance regarding the resolution of underwriting problems generated by the day-to-day caseload.
  • Recruits and hires the company Underwriting Staff.
  • Leads financial/budget development and management.
  • Builds, nurtures and strengthens client relationships at the Senior management level.
  • Develops the company’s visibility and presence in the industry as a knowledge expert.
  • Interact with client companies to develop customized programs revise underwriting requirements and help provide solutions to highly sensitive underwriting-related issues.
  • Underwriting lead for new pricing opportunities.
  • Ongoing participation in developing and monitoring underwriting guidelines. Compiling procedures and guidelines to aid in the development of the underwriting intranet and company client database.
  • Leads the company in defining and implementing underwriting philosophy for the Americas.
  • Leads the company in developing and monitoring the underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures for the Americas.
  • Reports on any arising risk or control breach to Chief Agent and Underwriting Management, without delay.
  • Prepare Regular Activity Reports to determine the effectiveness of the facultative UW team and recommend any remedial action to senior management.
  • Lead participant in strategic planning initiatives and projects for the Americas
  • May perform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ten or more years of insurance/reinsurance underwriting experience.
  • Three of management experience within a life underwriting department.
  • Fellow, Life Management Institute and Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting designations or equivalent.
  • In-depth knowledge of life and living benefit insurance industry products and services.
  • Strong decision making ability and leadership skills.
  • Self-motivated and autonomous.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in addition to real capacities to listen to clients.
  • Bilingual - French & English capacities are a plus.
  • Demonstrated successful track record working with sales and actuarial professionals, and other company underwriters.
  • Detailed understanding of Markets and Customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels & disciplines of internal and external organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional service & ability to use internal experts to achieve goals.
  • Ability to develop and maintain access to influential contacts within client companies and manage external client relationships.
  • Experience in improving productivity, quality, and reducing expenses.
  • Ability to identify problems, recommend viable solutions and assist in implementation of same.
  • Lead and manage ongoing business improvement processes.
  • Proactive communication to underwriting management regarding any pertinent issues.
  • Regular attendance required.
