  • Refines and maintains the pension governance framework taking into account the organization’s culture and values, pension legislative requirements and knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Provides leadership and counsel on regulatory compliance, statutory pension funding and reporting, enterprise financial note disclosures, special events impact analyses, and annual pension processes such as actuarial valuations review, actuarial assumption setting, and required filings.
  • Contributes to the annual management proxy by providing pension expertise and information ensuring all information is validated for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Contributes to and supports pension governance (Canadian and U.S.) activities, including formal committee meetings, reporting and document retention, and ensuring satisfactory resolution of inquiries from internal and external regulatory bodies.
  • Liaises and assists in management of relationships with external suppliers and industry to ensure status and currency of the pension governance.
  • Contributes and maintains currency of the pension investment governance framework, risk management framework and provides advisory support to Finance Center of Expertise, Accounting Policy and Pension Investment Management groups.
  • Conducts on-going assessments of the effectiveness and appropriateness of pension strategies and in frameworks to support policy development, governing principles and processes.
  • Consults on pension activities related to mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, including the coordination of pension input/work from internal and external sources.
  • Contributes to global strategy development and design of pension policies and programs (focused primarily on Canada, and support to other global regions in which operates) by providing highly specialized consulting expertise and by conducting regular diagnoses of problems and issues related to existing pension policies and programs.
  • Reviews new legislation, regulations and accounting standards governing the pension plan design, funding, expense and makes recommendations to ensure compliance and the company’s desired market competitive practice.
  • Manages direction to external actuaries and consultants on pension finance matters.
  • Manages and/or supports highly complex and high impact projects involving pension through consultation with Strategic Business Units and Line of Businesses and taking into consideration impacts, risks, funding, cost structures, laws and regulations.
  • Provides leadership and subject matter expertise to executives, HR leaders and other stakeholders, both internal and external, on complex and conceptual issues to increase capability and understanding of pension policy, financial risks and programs, including interpretation and advice on pension policy issues.
  • Participates in the annual budgeting and planning process for the Pension and Benefits Group.
  • Provides specialized guidance and actuarial expertise to Pension Accounting and Treasury for pension financial reporting and note disclosures.
  • Establishes policy for Mobility and International transfer services in relation to pension programs.
  • A high level of professional and technical expertise of complex and evolving pension programs and legislation in Canada, with some knowledge of other regions in the world where the company operates.
  • In-depth knowledge of pension compliance legislation, accounting standards and regulatory reporting requirements for all jurisdictions across Canada.
  • Actuarial designation is required.
  • In-depth policy and program design through conceptual thinking and solid subject matter expertise and experience.
  • Strong project management and organization skills in order to effectively manage priorities and meet timelines for deliverables.
  • Solid negotiation, communication and relationship management skills acquired through experience with managing complex pension issues and in-depth understanding of human resource policies and procedures.
  • Strong team building and ability to develop and maintain effective cross-functional relationships both internally and externally.
  • High level analytical and problem solving skills.
